Austin Boil-Water Order and Your Swimming Pool

Austin Boil-Water Order and Your Swimming Pool

As of the writing of this post, the media is reporting that the Austin’s boil-water order may last up to two weeks. This means that many grocery stores have been emptied of bottled water, numerous local businesses have had to close, coffee shops aren’t selling coffee, and pool owners have been prohibited from adding any water to their pool or spa.

According to the Austin American Statesman, the following water uses are prohibited:

Until further notice, Austin Water says customers may not:

  • Use water for irrigation
  • Wash vehicles
  • Add water to a pool
  • Operate an outdoor ornamental fountain or pond

As a pool owner, the boil-water order directive will have an obvious impact. Water is a necessary part of the swimming pool ecosystem so it is important to take proactive steps to ensure the health of your swimming pool.

First, try to keep your swimming pool water levels high enough for the pool system to run. Given that we expect rains to continue, this may not be a difficult step and your swimming pool should be able to weather the situation just fine.

However, if you aren’t able to keep your swimming levels up, close your skimmer valves and circulate from the main drain (if the level gets too low, if your pool works that way. Not all pools work in a manner that allows skimmers to be closed, although they all should.

If your swimming pool isn’t one of those with the ability to close the skimmers, and the water is too low to run the system, shock your swimming pool and shut it down until you can add water.

If you are having trouble maintaining the water level in your pool with all of this rain, there is a very good possibility that you have a leak. Call Crystal Clear Pools and Spas for a leak detection and the necessary repairs to save water, as well as pool chemicals that would otherwise just leak out. Not only is that good for our environment, it will make your pool less costly to operate.

If you invest in taking care of your swimming pool now, while we’re in the midst of the boil-water order, you’ll save yourself time, money, and headaches.
